ethics of storytelling, and of listening
For Paul Ricoeur, the core of ethics of narratives is our ability and responsibility to tell time-and place-bound as well as value-laden stories - stories that push forward alternatives and different viewpoints. But is this enough? Mika Hannula claims that we ought to demand more from the idea of ethics of storytelling, and to pay attention to the dual character of storytelling. For any kind of story, we need the ones who tell it, and the ones who listen to it. Thus, we need a context, and we need a reciprocal relationship. We require not only the ethics of telling the story, but also the ethics of listening.
Presentatie suggestie:
Overtuigen is de crux.
Geïnspireerd, gedreven, helder en aantrekkelijk aan het oppervlak;

CULTUURMIJL ENSCHEDE KRIJGT GELUIDSKUNSTWERK BILL FONTANA
13:30 Inloop Grote Kerk, Oude Markt, Enschede
14:00 Lezing Bill Fontana in Grote Kerk
15.15 Persmoment: gelegenheid voor vragen/korte interviews
16.00 Openingshandeling voor de Grote Kerk
16:15 Wandeling Cultuurmijl
17:00 Borrel in TwentseWelle
Uiteraard bent u welkom op de lezing. De plaatsen daarvoor zijn echter beperkt. U kunt zich aanmelden via: b.koopman@keijzercommunicatie.nl

Inschrijving Rotterdam designprijs 2009 is gestart!

Anthony Burrill in ‘Colourful imagination’:

Add Comment: Designing Critique in Public Forums
Avondsymposium, vrijdag 28 nov 2008, 19:00-22:00

Now is the Time: Art & Theory in the 21st Century
Lecture Series Fall/Winter 08/09
After the enormous success of the first three evenings with lectures and debates surrounding the themes of Media, 9/11 and Globalisation we would like to inform you of the fourth evening in the lecture series Now is the Time: Art & Theory in the 21st Century focussing on the topic of Design, which will take place on Thursday, November 27th at 8 p.m.
During this evening the British writer and expert in the field of graphic design Rick Poynor (UK) and Dutch art historian and critic Camiel van Winkel (NL) will present lectures engaging with questions such as: how can we define the current relationship between design, art and mass culture? In which ways do design and art differ from each other in terms of social engagement? And is there, in our contemporary visual culture which appears to be dominated by commerce, such a thing as ‘critical design’?
The lectures are followed by a debate with experts and the public, moderated by Dutch design historian and -critic Frederike Huygen.

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS JAN VAN EYCK
Extrastatecraft: Hidden Organizations, Spatial Contagions and Activism
Deadline applications: 24 November 2008.
Artists, designers and theoreticians are invited to submit proposals for individual or collective research projects for a one-year, two-year or variable research period in the department of Design.
Extrastatecraft: Hidden Organizations, Spatial Contagions and Activism, a new project of the Design department, initiated by Keller Easterling, researches underexplored territory in the world's infrastructural and organizational strata. The work focuses on shared protocols, managerial subroutines and financial instruments as they produce and program physical space around the world. Perhaps because these organizations operate in the background, in an active and relational rather than nominative register, their political outcomes are often at once pervasive and mysterious.
For instance, how do organizations like the ISO (International Organization for Standardization) or McKinsey determine management protocols? How do construction networks, more than the singular creations of architects and urbanists, disseminate materials and processes that determine how the world is calibrated? How do markets and financial instruments create templates that shape space?
The research also explores the political leverage latent in this renovated conception of global infrastructure. Some of the most radical changes to the globalizing world are being written, not in the language of law and diplomacy, but rather in the language of architecture, urbanism and infrastructure. Armand Mattelart argues that global infrastructure is a field that is 'young and uncharted' largely because it is often still considered in terms of national rather than international histories. Moreover, the political instrumentality of these increasingly familiar global spheres is still frequently theorized in terms of militarization or universal rationalization, when they might really be agents of more discrepant or obscure forms of polity. The notion that there is either a dominant logic or a proper forthright realm of political negotiation usually acts as the perfect camouflage for parallel political activity - the medium of subterfuge, hoax and hyperbole that actually rules the world.
Extrastatecraft will consider a number of tools effective in manipulating active organization, but will pay particular attention to the ways in which these organizations are really populations of repeatable components and formats, the arrangement and chemistry of which possess a political disposition. The project will research multipliers in the organization that make components contagious and powerful as shapers of polity, and will consider these as stealthy tools of activism. New objects of practice and entrepreneurialism, redefined in a relational register, reflect the network's ability to amplify structural shifts or repeatable moves. If icons of piety, collusion or competition often escalate tensions, might alternative design ingenuities distract from them? Having customarily absented itself from official political channels, architecture, as extrastatecraft, finds itself in an unexpectedly consequential position, manipulating codes of passage and points of leverage in the thickening back channels of global infrastructure.
While researchers will find in the topic many points of entry, some anticipated research agendas address the managerial and infrastructural substrates of space related to finance, construction, trade and marketing. Travel, language skills, archival experience and fieldwork will serve the research. Textual, graphic or design documents may contribute to the final collective product.
Candidates interested in this project can apply with a research proposal. Selected candidates gain the position of researcher at the Design department of the Jan van Eyck Academie.

Geraldine Jeanjean - Aumont
Design: Roger Willems & Johan Thermænius, 2008, soft cover, 112 pages, 24 x 33 cm, full colour & duotone, ISBN/EAN 978-90-8690-190-6, retail price: € 24,95
Also available the limited edition of 10, with a print from the artist, signed and numbered, retail price: € 250,-
Aumont is in the most sparsely populated region of France. This is the place were these people were born, built their houses, set up a business, started a family and ultimately grow old and die. This is where they have encountered all the people they know. This is their land and their world.
My summers were here. I'm here when the sun shines. I look for shade when I'm hot and drink water from a spring. I sleep in a room in our family house where no one lives. Who am I to claim this village as mine? What's left is a remote place where we gather to spend another summer together; the closest we get to being a family. So, I find it a comforting place, where everything seems interlaced and to make sense, as if all things originate here. But that is an illusion. It's like walking into the middle of a play that is simple, but dramatic, funny and predictable. I have always felt a fascination for this place; for its distinction between how I was and how it is. I still take part in it even though I grew into more of an observer, as this has become distant from my daily life.
Today the elderly are in charge in Aumont and the prevailing atmosphere suggests a generation has been passed over. Many houses stand empty. The young have gradually left in search of a future elsewhere. Now, while the last traces still remain, I want to secure this place before it disappears completely, in an attempt to hold the memory of it and clarify my consciousness. My double nationality has both advantages and drawbacks, but since two are better than one I get to create my own truth from the best of both. But that leaves me in search of silent complicity.
This project is a portrait of a small community that is disappearing like so many others.
Maaike Schoorel - Album
Text: Xander Karskens & Maxine Kopsa, design: Julia Born & Laurenz Brunner, English/Dutch, soft cover, 72 pages, 24 x 33 cm, full colour, ISBN/EAN 978-90-8690-177-7, retail price: € 27,50
Rooted in traditional painterly genres as the (group) portrait, the still life, and the nude, Maaike Schoorel's wonderfully subtle oeuvre addresses highly contemporary concerns surrounding the gaze, retinal perception, and image consumption. Her strongly reduced but precisely controlled scenes balance on the edge of legibility, resisting an easy reading and creating an emphatically temporal painterly space.
'Album' is the first publication on the work of Schoorel, covering 5 years of her production up to her most recent works, in size-scaled full color reproductions. An extensive interview with the artist by curator Xander Karskens, and an essay by writer/curator Maxine Kopsa provide an insight in one of today's most exciting painters' practice.
Oscar Lourens - POSSESSING SPACE
Text: Jeroen van den Eijnde & Gerard Koek, design: Oscar Lourens i.s.m. Jozee Brouwer, 2008, 160 pages, 24 x 17 cm, full colour, ISBN/EAN 978-90-8690-211-8, retail price: € 29,95
Also available the limited edition of 50, an inktjetprint at Hahnemühle German Etching pasted at aluminium, 35 x 50 cm, retail price: € 250,-
To possess is to have power. Those who strive to have or hold power, strive to own objects or people. One successful way of obtaining power is to –figuratively or actually- model the object one wishes to dominate. One reduces people to docile subjects or one miniaturizes objects or areas to models or maps. Therefore, people in power enjoy studying the maps of to-be-colonized territories or the cardboard models and structures of real estate and city plans. Those who dwell in the miniature world of dollhouses or model trains are the queens and kings of an infinite world.
Oscar Lourens is an artist. Since 1996, he has produced models of architectonical spaces he aspires to possess, mostly from a position of personal involvement. These spaces are often part of his day-to-day environment: the places where he eats, sleeps, works or exhibits his work. Lourens tries to ‘seize ownership’ of these spaces through systematic documentation and ordering and through reduction to a smaller, more feasible scale.
The book, POSSESSING SPACE, collects all the work of the period between 1998 and 2008, ordered according to the locations that formed the basis of the works
ENRICHING
Art direction & concept: Jeroen van Erp & Joana Mühlenbrock, editor: Pieter Desmet, Jeroen van Erp, Catherine Hu & Lara van der Veen, design: Joana Mühlenbrock, 2008, English, soft cover, 240 pages, 17 x 22,5 cm, ISBN 978-90-8690-215-6, retail price: € 24,95
‘It was a valuable learning experience to gain a different perspective that challenges a familiar territory’. This was a reaction I got from one of the professional designers who participated in the design & emotion workshop held in Hong Kong and Delft. T his phrase captures the essence of one of the goals of the project; showing a different attitude towards the design process by producing some valuable cases of emotion driven design.
The workshop was an initiative of the Design & Emotion Society and was organized in collaboration with The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Since its foundation in 1999, the Design & E motion Society has arranged a series of workshops in the Netherlands, Germany, England and Portugal, among other places. The society successfully organized energizing workshop events, and the idea arose of finding a way to register the process and results of future workshops in order to inspire the three core strands of the society: researchers, industry & the design community. A great opportunity was offered by participating in the Open Minds programme that was organized by the Dutch Ministry of Economic affairs. One of the goals of this programme is to bring together the Dutch and Chinese design communities. Following on from this, the idea arose to hold a workshop with a mixture of Dutch and Chinese professionals and students representing a variety of design disciplines and design schools. The first part took place in Hong Kong with the complete group in mid-June. The second, concluding session was held with the students only in Delft, the Netherlands in the first week of July. The participants generally had no preconceived expectations, but they were definitely curious. The atmosphere within the group was optimistic and energizing from the word go, which I hope you can sense in this book. All the participants contributed to the content of the book. And although it was not an explicit goal of the project, the Chinese and Dutch designers and students became very close and real friends.
This book is the end result of the project. The goal of was not to create finished designs but to create showcases that can illustrate an emotion-driven design approach. It was the theoretical framework rather than the result that held a central place in the approach. The result is some inspiring cases with comments from the facilitators. I hope they will stimulate your thoughts, they will inspire you

'Animal Estates 6.0: Utrecht'

ethics of storytelling, and of listening
For Paul Ricoeur, the core of ethics of narratives is our ability and responsibility to tell time-and place-bound as well as value-laden stories - stories that push forward alternatives and different viewpoints. But is this enough? Mika Hannula claims that we ought to demand more from the idea of ethics of storytelling, and to pay attention to the dual character of storytelling. For any kind of story, we need the ones who tell it, and the ones who listen to it. Thus, we need a context, and we need a reciprocal relationship. We require not only the ethics of telling the story, but also the ethics of listening.
Suggestie Presentatie:
Overtuigen is de crux.
Geïnspireerd, gedreven, helder en aantrekkelijk aan het oppervlak;

Anthony Burrill in ‘Colourful imagination’:

Add Comment: Designing Critique in Public Forums
Avondsymposium, vrijdag 28 nov 2008, 19:00-22:00

Dagboek van twee acteurs in Kamp Holland
Text: Leopold Witte & Geert Lageveen, design: Robin Uleman, 2008, Dutch, soft cover, 168 pages, 12,5 x 20 cm, ISBN/EAN 978-90-8690-210-1, retail price: € 19,95

Locatie: Nettenfabriek Apeldoorn, Spoorstraat 29 Apeldoorn (naast NS Station).

A Safe Place - International Standard of Disaster Pictogram
After Neurath

Design Negation
This research project seeks to establish new vocabularies and aesthetic possibilities for design to formulate a political negation. It aspires to formulate a response to the current wave of populist views in public opinion and politics in the Netherlands. It departs from the point of view that these emergent movements cannot be addressed by traditional vocabularies and strategies; research is needed.
Currently, many design gestures fulfil, even if they are 'dressed in dissent', an affirmative role in relation to their social and political surroundings. 'Critical design' has increasingly become a matter of armchair debates among experts, its history linked to the slow transformation of emancipatory movements of the past that have transformed into consensual partners of the welfare state.
Design has withdrawn its potential to intervene from everyday reality – that requires not only judgment, but also decisions – in order to concentrate on goals associated with universal 'good' and 'social values'. It turns out that many of these goals are now served by the principles of marketing and advertising, and as such fail to grasp the particularities of situations. The emergence of right-wing populism presents a possibility for designers to update their social and political priorities.
Design Negation will consist of intellectual, creative and practical research and production regarding the rightist politicians that have come to the fore in the Netherlands in the post-Fortuyn years. These politicians claim that they have simple and effective answers to the social, political and cultural implications of immigration and globalization, and count among their supporters many people who do not identify with the existing party elites. Design Negation believes that a potential answer does not only lie in creating a counter language, but also in studying and investigating the socio-political mechanisms of these movements.
What role does the Internet and in particular the social networking platform play in the construction of Rita Verdonk's 'politics 2.0'?
How is the anonymity of the Internet used to 'confront' the other and 'express one's opinion'?
Do hate speeches and 'freedom of expression' work together to ensureprivileged forms of public opinion?
Which companies, brands and other private players align themselves with the politics of right-wing populism by advertising on its web platforms?
What kinds of new hegemonies and power relations are created in the self-declared abolition of party politics?
In what ways are corporate interests represented in these movements?
How does right-wing populism provide symbols and images which on the one hand dissociate it from social-democratic practices, and on the other hand from the permanent threat of being identified with the extreme right?
In the meantime, by means of a series of public discussions and lectures, Design Negation will set up a discourse about these core topics with artists, designers, theoreticians, politicians, researchers, activists and the public. Design Negation will start as of Fall 2008.

international on-line competition for university students
La Biennale di Venezia
11th International Architecture Exhibition
EveryVille 2008
Communities beyond Place, Civic consciousness beyond Architecture
International on-line competition for university students
Venice, 8 April 2008 – For the 11th International Architecture Exhibition, Out There: Architecture Beyond Building, the Biennale di Venezia, chaired by Paolo Baratta, presents, with Telecom Italia, the international on-line competition, EveryVille 2008. Communities beyond Place, Civic consciousness beyond Architecture, curated by Aaron Betsky and Francesco Delogu and open to students of all disciplines from Italian and foreign universities, who have not graduated within January, 1st 2008.
EveryVille 2008 is an initiative made possible by the collaboration between the Biennale di Venezia and Gruppo Telecom Italia, which makes available the most innovative technology for the realisation of the contest and for the display of the winning projects. Software powered by newitalianblood.com in collaboration with domus.
The presentation of EveryVille 2008 on 8th April at the Auditorium of Santa Marta in the University of IUAV in Venice, will see the participation of the Biennale’s President, Paolo Baratta, the Rector of the University of IUAV, Carlo Magnani, and the Director of the 11th International Exhibition of Architecture, Aaron Betsky, with an open lesson.
By vocation, the Biennale di Venezia believes in the young, in their creative ability, the strength of their ideas. This is a conviction that over time has taken material form in dedicated initiatives and projects and which, for the 11th International Exhibition of Architecture (14th September - 23rd November 2008), will take the form of the EveryVille 2008 competition.
The competition invites participants to elaborate an idea or project on the basis of a theoretical and critical text by the Director of the 11th Exhibition, Aaron Betsky. The new feature, which provides an element of challenge and the great stimulus in the contest, lies in the fact that the work of the first ten in the rankings and 40 honourable mentions – as selected by the international jury, chaired by the Biennale Chairman, Paolo Baratta, and comprising Aaron Betsky, Francesco Delogu, Zaha Hadid, Thom Mayne, Luisa Hutton, Flavio Albanese and Luigi Centola – will become an integral part of the 11th Exhibition and will be displayed in a special section in the Artiglierie dell’Arsenale, Venice. For the inauguration of the 11th Exhibition, an official awards ceremony for the 50 groups will be held in the presence of the President, Paolo Baratta and of the Director, Aaron Betsky, with the conferment of the diplomas and certificates of merit.
Competitors can register on line from 8th April 2008 and must do so by 1st July 2008 (10 a.m. Italian time), filling in the form available from www.everyville.labiennale.org. Participation can be effected individually or through the formation of a group. Interdisciplinary and multicultural collaborations are encouraged. A payment of euro 10 will be requested for every individual registering for the competition, or for every component of a group intending to participate. All participants will receive free entry to the 11th International Exhibition of Architecture.
In the text describing the competition, Aaron Betsky illustrates an imaginary and at the same time real city, EveryVille, and observes it in the future; the theme he proposes working on is the constitution of a sense of community beyond physical space and – vice versa – the imagination of an architectural system able to create a sense of belonging. Students are invited to explore the contents and methods of experimental and innovative architecture, and at the same time to reflect on the concepts linked to technology and communications.
An imagined scenario is presented in which the administrators of EveryVille are discussing how best “to give a sense of identity and coherence” to this new urban conglomeration, drawing in the citizens into the decision. During a consultation, these citizens are divided as to whether it should be “the symbolic fulcrum of the new community”. There are those who propose a symbolic and monumental building; others something like a university and campus able to house the administrative offices; others again a more traditional town hall. Most citizens, however, believe public buildings to be “a waste of time and money” and that a Starbuck’s would be more useful and appealing. The mayor of EveryVille is interested in developing a “programme that goes beyond buildings”, in tracing out guidelines enabling the city to “grow as a cohesive and participative community, within a healthy setting”. Participants in the competition must imagine solutions conferring “an image, a coherence, a character and a civic consciousness” on the small town, in accordance with its position, history, site and future. The proposals may be eccentric and even utopian. The proposals presented must be developed as an idea or project showing “the citizens how EveryVille will appear in ten years’ time and how this community will acquire significance through architecture”. The materials requested include two images (which can include several drawings) of the idea or project and a descriptive text in English of a maximum of 2000 characters.
Gruppo Telecom Italia, a partner of the Biennale di Venezia for other important initiatives, is renewing its commitment to the Fondazione by guaranteeing the availability of the best technology for the realisation in real time and exclusively on line, of an original and particularly rewarding contest for the young public.
Telecom Italia will stand alongside the Fondazione also for the successive “physical” manifestation of the winning and noted entries, which will be displayed in the Exhibition’s spaces in the Giardini and the Arsenale.
Newitalianblood, the only interactive portal equipped with patented systems for the integral operation of competitions and architectural awards on line, is providing the dedicated software for the operation of the contest on line. domus, the international magazine, is collaborating in the realisation of the initiative by offering valuable promotion of the contest.
The 11th International Architecture Exhibition, Out There: Architecture Beyond Building, directed by Aaron Betsky and organised by the Biennale di Venezia, chaired by Paolo Baratta, will be held in Venice from Sunday 14th September to Sunday 23rd November 2008 in the Giardini and at the Arsenale. The vernissage will take place on the 11th, 12th and 13th September 2008.
Aaron Betsky – former director for six years of the Netherlands Architecture Institute (NAI) in Rotterdam, one of the most important museums and architecture centres in the world, and director since last year of the Cincinnati Art Museum – is putting together the 11th International Architecture Exhibition with the help of an international group of curators: Francesco Delogu, Emiliano Gandolfi, Casey Jones, Reed Kroloff and Saskia van Stein. Their work will form the basis also for a catalogue and a series of conferences and debates. The catalogue of the 11th Exhibition will be published by Marsilio. The official website is www.labiennale.org.

Call for participation: WALL
WALL is an installation during Kunstvlaai 7 from May 10 till 18, carried out by
Petersburg Project Space; the newest artist initiative in the center of Amsterdam.
Petersburg Project Space designed a specific wall to serve as a physical barrier inside the project space Petersburg will be introducing May 24th. The partition defines the border between the public exhibition area, and the private executive area. On Kunstvlaai 7, we will present a copy of this barrier, WALL, in the outside-exhibition-part of the art fair.
WALL emphasizes and denies our space. By taking the barrier from our project space into the public field, an infinite artist run space is formed. By way of this 'displacement' we want to redefine the value of the WALL outside. Inside Petersburg Project Space the wall is functional; separating the private and public space. Outside the wall is an obstacle which will need to be transformed into a center point.
We ask artists to invent new meaning for our relocated WALL. There will be a selection of 10 proposals. Check www.petersburgprojectspace.org for more information about the criteria, deadline, budget, and how to apply.

4th April thru 22nd of June
The focus on the activities of border-crossing, migration and reinvention, and the issues of identity formation, and of seeking new perspectives on the familiar, stem from the emotional history of the town of Friedrichshafen itself, as a border point with an active customs office, as the home of the Zeppelin airship and as the site of devastating bombing at the end of WW2. It is not the least of the roles of borders, to seek to define difference, and with this identity. But, to which region, which country or which city can we say we really belong? How is a city, town or region"s identity constructed? How are the boundaries to other regions, or other cultures, established?
The commissioned projects for the exhibition have seen local and international artists visiting the region and researching these and related questions. The works they present aim to offer triennale visitors, whether locals or guests, new and exciting artistic insights with reference to the place where they find themselves. Having nothing to declare can, after all, also be understood as having nothing to hide.

Artists on Screen
Short film and video is still the prime source of innovation for the art of film. In addition, it is being adopted by an ever increasing number of artists as a form of expression. Today its diversity of forms, themes and approaches across the globe is greater than ever, in the cinemas or in the galleries.
The International Short Film Festival Oberhausen has been part of this highly charged field for over 50 years now, as a catalyst and a showcase for contemporary developments, a forum for what are often heated discussions, a discoverer of new trends and talent, and not least as one of the most important short film institutions anywhere in the world. Some 6500 films submitted in 2007, around 500 films shown in the festival programmes and over 1100 accredited industry professionals are proof enough.
Films
In addition to its four competitions, Oberhausen is known for its extensive thematic programmes and retrospectives. In 2008, the main theme programme, entitled "Border-Crossers and Trouble-Makers" and curated by Sherry Millner and Ernest Larsen (USA) and Madeleine Bernstorff (Germany), will explore the history of political film, looking at strategies and practices of resistance from legendary political landmarks such as Chris Marker or the Yugoslavian Black Film to works reacting to today"s permanent state of emergency.
A second theme programme, "Whose History?", curated by Ian White, will explore the question how artists" film and video look at history, including works by Marcel Broodthaers, Ken Jacobs, Alexander Kluge, Malcolm LeGrice, Lis Rhodes and Emily Wardill.
In the 2008 profiles, the festival features four artists whose works range from classic abstract experiments to political video art. The programme of works by French filmmaker Patrice Kirchhofer offers a rare opportunity to see his radical experiments. Two programmes each are dedicated to British filmmaker and artist Andrew Kőtting and Lebanese video artist Akram Zaatari. The last profile will feature the work of British artist Lis Rhodes.
Discussions
The Podium series of discussions, established in 2006, brings scholars, curators, artists and authors together to discuss current aesthetic, technological, cultural policy and economic issues. Questions to be debated this year will include "Film festivals as a new contemporary film museum?" and "Is criticism still pertinent?", as well as two discussions complementing the thematic programmes. Participants include Ann Demeester, Ruth Noack, Emily Roysdon, Keith Sanborn, Hito Steyerl and Zelimir Zilnik.
Market
An excellently equipped Video Library with an estimated 6000 new short films to chose from and a series of market Screenings by the leading international distributors of experimental film and video are available to buyers, distributors, festival programmers, commissioning editors and other industry visitors.
Book: Kinomuseum Towards an Artists' Cinema
Now available is the anthology Kinomuseum Towards an Artists Cinema, edited by Mike Sperlinger and Ian White, a collection of essays and texts by some of the most influential artists and curators working with the moving image today. The book is based on the successful screening series "Kinomuseum" which Oberhausen presented in 2007.
Texts by Ian White, Morgan Fisher, Dan Graham, Lucian Harris, Emily Pethick; Mary Kelly, Achim Borchardt-Hume, AA Bronson, Mark Leckey, Lars Henrik Gass. (Published by Walther Koenig, Cologne, ISBN 978-3-86560-325-8).

ethics of storytelling, and of listening
PUBLIC LECTURE BY MIKA HANNULA

Location: Piet Zwart Institute, Mauritsstraat 36, 3012 CJ Rotterdam
Ethics of Storytelling
According to the Aristotelian idea of seeing life as a narrative, a good life of a human being is spent searching for the good life of a human being. This is not an empty tautology. Rather, it forces us to provide contextualized versions for what it means to be an active, critical and self-reflective human being. The idea of seeing life as a narrative also points directly to the obvious consequence: if and when it is a narrative, there are always plural, contested and conflictual ways to describe yourself.
Two writers that have articulated the power of self-definition through narratives are Albert Camus and Salman Rushdie. They describe the power to be able to participate in the production of meanings as situated and embedded selves.
For Paul Ricoeur, the core of ethics of narratives is our ability and responsibility to tell time-
and place-bound as well as value-laden stories - stories that push forward alternatives and different viewpoints.

Dag derde jaars,
Geïnspireerd, gedreven, helder en aantrekkelijk aan het oppervlak;

The Language of the Global Polis' (NAi Uitgevers i.s.m. Stroom Den Haag, 2008).

Forms of Inquiry: the Architecture of Critical Graphic Design

Opening and book launch 17 January, 20.00
Preceded by a talk by Zak Kyes and Radim Pesko, and other contributors, 19.00
Deelnemers: Åbäke (UK), Julia Born (CH) & Alexandra Bachzetsis (CH), Sara De Bondt (BE), deValence (FR), Dexter Sinister (US), Paul Elliman (UK), Experimental Jetset (NL), James Goggin (UK), Will Holder (UK), Hudson-Powell (UK), Kasia Korczak (PL), Jürg Lehni (CH), Karel Martens & David Bennewith (NL), Metahaven (NL), Mevis en van Deursen (NL), John Morgan (UK), Radim Pesko (CZ), Project Projects (US), Manuel Raeder (DE), Jon Sueda, Alex DeArmond, Emmet Byrne (US), Michael Worthington (US) Deelnemers Reading Room: Stefano Boeri & Paola Nicolin / Abitare (IT) TBC, Sandra Kassenaar / Werkplaats Typografie (NL), Casco (NL), Jörg Koch / 032c (DE), Zak Kyes & Wayne Daly / AA Print Studio (UK), Jonathan Maghen / Textfield (US), Benjamin Sommerhalder / Nieves (CH), Sulki & Min / Specter Press (KR), Luke Wood & Jonty Valentine / The National Grid (NZ) Lezingen:
